Visual clarity for people packs: fewer series, stronger titles

A practical guide to chart titles, color restraint, and annotations that help HR reporting land in leadership meetings.

Minimal workforce chart printouts with clear titles on a dark surface

People packs often carry too many series on one chart. When every team color appears at once, leaders scan for their own line and miss the story. Choose one comparison that matters for the meeting, then leave the rest for an appendix.

Titles should state the finding, not the chart type. “Voluntary attrition rose in Q3 among tenure under two years” beats “Attrition by tenure.” Axis labels and units belong on the chart; the title carries the claim you are prepared to defend.

Use color sparingly. One accent for the series under discussion, muted tones for context, and no decorative gradients. Annotations work better than legends when only two or three points matter.

Print a draft and sit with it for five minutes away from the screen. If a colleague cannot restate the point after a glance, simplify before the leadership meeting.
